Tomioka(富岡商店), located in the historic town of Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture(秋田県角館町), has been safeguarding the art of Kaba-zaiku(樺細工), or cherry bark craft, since 1970. This centuries-old tradition, recognised as a Japanese folk art(民藝), transforms the bark of the Japanese cherry tree into exquisite, functional creations. With origins dating back to the late 18th century, Kaba-zaiku combines elegance and practicality, reflecting the beauty and warmth of nature. Tomioka continues to honour this heritage, ensuring that the cultural and artistic significance of Kaba-zaiku thrives for future generations.
The cherry bark used in Kaba-zaiku is sourced sustainably, as a by-product of forestry practices designed to protect and renew the surrounding mountains. This process, known as "renewal(再生),” ensures a balanced forest ecosystem for generations to come. The use of cherry bark dates back to the Jomon period, when it was first utilised to strengthen baskets, later becoming central to Japanese craftsmanship. By creating these timeless pieces, Tomioka celebrates the gifts of nature while continuing the legacy of living in harmony with the environment.
