USUKIYAKI / 臼杵焼

Revived by potter and chef Hiroyuki Usami and his team, Usukiyaki is more than tableware; it reflects the beauty of nature and the quiet dedication of true artisans. Inspired by the hills, sea and seasonal flowers of Usuki, each piece is shaped by hand using the Katauchi technique (a traditional hand-press moulding method), with soft, petal-like edges that cast gentle shadows. The glazes, perfected through years of experimentation, offer a soft, matte finish that balances beauty, texture and utility, enhancing the dishes they hold.

At the heart of Usuki yaki is a simple belief: “Our aim is to craft products that will be loved and used over many years.” Each piece is the result of patience and thoughtful making — embracing the natural variations and quiet surprises that emerge during firing. This small-scale, considered approach makes every piece unique and meaningful. With a strong commitment to sustainability, any imperfect pieces are reworked and refired rather than wasted.
