In the quiet rhythm of Japanese tea preparation, the yuzamashi plays a subtle yet essential role. Crafted by artisans in Tokoname — one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns — these water-cooling bowls are designed to bring boiling water to the perfect temperature before it touches delicate tea leaves.
Pouring hot water into a yuzamashi allows it to cool slightly, ensuring that sencha, gyokuro, and other fine teas reveal their natural sweetness and umami, while softening any bitterness. This thoughtful pause honours both the leaves and the moment.
Thrown in Tokoname from iron-rich clay, this piece shows two complementary faces of the same bowl: a natural kiln-shift that graduates from deep charcoal to warm persimmon red, and a delicate sakura motif that nods to the changing seasons. A neat spout and gently flared rim ensure a smooth, controlled pour, while a small stamped medallion adds tactile character.
Simple, intuitive, and versatile, it’s an understated companion to any tea ritual—equally at home beside a kyusu or as a small server for other infusions.
As every piece has its handmade feature, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
