Youna Matsushita Japanese Calligraphy - Spring / 春 - 松下夕那
"春" – Spring, Renewal, and Vitality
"春" (Haru) symbolises the arrival of spring—a season of renewal, growth, and boundless energy. It represents new beginnings, warmth, and the flourishing of life, capturing the joy of fresh possibilities. In Japanese culture, "春" is closely associated with the beauty of cherry blossoms (sakura), signifying fleeting yet profound moments of transformation and appreciation for nature’s rhythms.
What occasions merit its use?
Celebrated in Japanese calligraphy and artistic expression, "春" brings an uplifting presence to any space. Whether displayed to welcome positive change, gifted to mark a fresh chapter in life, or incorporated into artistic compositions, it serves as a timeless emblem of hope and vitality. Much like "清" (Purity) and "和" (Harmony), "春" reflects a deep connection to nature, reminding us to embrace growth, joy, and the beauty of each passing season.
Our Artisan - Youna Matsushita
Youna Matsushita is a talented and unique freedom Japanese calligrapher who has found her own creative voice through her passion for the art form.
Raised in the rural countryside of Yamaguchi Prefecture and spending her childhood on a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, Youna developed a love for nature and the great outdoors. Her introduction to calligraphy came from a friend and was not a formal class, allowing her to express herself freely and openly with the brush.
Her calligraphy is characterized by bold, dynamic brush strokes, a departure from traditional rules and conventions, delicate lines, and a captivating beauty that radiates from each character she writes.
Her background, including her grandfather's painting and her career in architecture, has given her a unique perspective and artistic vision that shines through in her work.
Today, Youna continues to write every day and expresses her love of nature and the sounds around her through her calligraphy.
Matsushita-san sought to honour the essence of tradition by using locally crafted washi paper. In her search, she discovered Shinshu Matsuzaki Washi—a handmade paper woven from the natural abundance of the region. Infused with leaves and straw, each sheet carries the quiet warmth of nature, embodying the changing beauty of the seasons. Carefully selected for the Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter designs, this washi reflects the fleeting yet timeless essence of nature’s cycle.
