Description

Make Your Own Bread Lamp

Bread becomes light.

Join Japanese artist and PAMPSHADE creator Yukiko Morita for an intimate, hands-on workshop in which you will transform a real bread into your own softly glowing bread lamp.

With only five participants in each session, this special workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from the artist and experience the careful process behind one of Japan’s most imaginative contemporary craft creations.

Important Booking Information

Please note that this listing is for one place in a guided workshop. It is not a purchase of a ready-made PAMPSHADE lamp.

Each booking is for one participant, who will create one bread lamp during the workshop and take their completed piece home.

From Bread to Light

At first glance, it looks like a freshly baked bread. Once illuminated, however, its delicate layers begin to glow with a warm, buttery light.

PAMPSHADE was created by Japanese artist Yukiko Morita from a desire to preserve the natural beauty of bread and give it a new life beyond the bakery. By carefully hollowing, drying and protecting real bread, Yukiko transforms something familiar and fleeting into a lasting piece of functional art.

During this workshop, Yukiko will introduce the story and philosophy behind PAMPSHADE before personally guiding participants through the process of making their own bread lamp.

This is more than a craft workshop. It is an opportunity to explore the relationship between food, sustainability, light and imagination—and to discover how an everyday object can be transformed through careful observation and craftsmanship.

What You Will Create

Each participant will create one small bread lamp using real bread. The bread used for this introductory workshop will be approximately palm-sized, making it more manageable for participants who are learning the PAMPSHADE-making process for the first time.

Please note that your finished lamp will naturally differ from the professionally finished PAMPSHADE pieces available from Osara. Yukiko Morita has developed her technique through many years of practice, and her retail pieces reflect a highly refined level of professional craftsmanship.

As this is a hands-on introductory workshop, each participant’s result will depend on their individual experience and technique. Small differences in shaping, hollowing, coating and overall finish are expected and form part of the personal character of your handmade lamp.

Because every bread also has its own shape, layers, colour and texture, no two finished lamps will ever be exactly the same. Small cracks, openings and irregularities are natural features rather than defects.

Your finished lamp will be carefully packaged for you to take home after the workshop.

Important Workshop Information

Adults-Only Workshop

This workshop is designed for adults. Children are not permitted to participate in or accompany guests to the workshop.

Workshop Environment

This workshop will be held in the Food Hall at South Melbourne Market.

As the workshop takes place within an active public market, there may be background noise, passing visitors and general activity around the workshop area. We appreciate your understanding that the environment may be livelier than a private studio setting.

Yukiko Morita will personally guide participants through the creative process, and members of the Osara team will remain on site throughout the session to assist with interpretation, materials, equipment and individual support.

Before Booking

Please read the following information carefully before reserving your place:

  • This listing is for participation in a workshop and is not the purchase of a professionally finished PAMPSHADE lamp.
  • One booking is required for each participant.
  • This is an adults-only workshop. Children cannot participate or attend as accompanying guests.

  • Individual differences in technique, shape, coating and finish are expected.
  • The workshop will take place in the public Food Hall at South Melbourne Market, where there may be background noise, foot traffic and other market activity.

  • Participants must follow the instructions of the artist and the Osara team when handling tools, coatings and lighting components.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for a hands-on craft activity.
  • The finished lamp should be handled carefully, in the same way you would handle a delicate ceramic or glass object.
