Wappa Hinoki Cypress Tray - Small 24 cm / 東濃檜 わっぱ盆
Tono Cypress(東濃檜), particularly that which grows in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture, Japan, boasts a remarkable and lustrous wood grain. It thrives in the cold climate, developing slowly into high-quality timber with intricate wood patterns. Over time, the wood takes on a radiant sheen, enhancing its natural beauty with a touch of pinkish hue.
This splendid Curved Wooden Tray is a testament to the timeless craftsmanship and the uniqueness of Tono Cypress. Crafted using traditional "wappa" techniques, every stage of its production, from wood selection to shaping and polishing, is meticulously performed by the skilled hands of a wappa artisan.
The "Mage" process, which involves bending the wood, starts by softening thinly sliced boards in hot water, allowing them to be gently rolled while pliable. After this, the wood is secured and allowed to dry, and finally, it is shaped into its distinctive form. Cherry bark is intricately woven into the curved wood joints, adding a tasteful touch.
The bottom of the tray is made from "Sawara," a wood species belonging to the Cypress family, known for its strong resistance to moisture and exceptional antimicrobial properties. This makes it perfect for use as a culinary tray or serving platter.
As every piece has its handmade feature, slight irregularities in size, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
