Tea Ceremony Water Ladle - Hishaku / 茶道具 柄杓
The Hishaku is a traditional Japanese water ladle meticulously crafted from bamboo, embodying both functional elegance and cultural significance. This delicate tool is integral to the Japanese tea ceremony, where it is used to transfer water from the hot water urn (Kama) to the tea bowl (Chawan). Its design allows for a graceful, measured pour, enhancing the ritual's meditative and respectful atmosphere. Each Hishaku is hand-carved, showcasing the natural beauty and unique characteristics of the bamboo, making it not only a practical accessory but also a beautiful display piece.
This particular Hishaku is the work of Mr. Sabun Kubo, a distinguished artisan who represents the 24th generation of the Takayama Chasen tradition. Takayama Chasen has a storied history of around 500 years, dating back to the late Muromachi period. This tradition is celebrated for its dedication to the art of tea utensils, and Mr. Kubo's expertise is recognized by the Japanese government with the title of "traditional craftsman" (伝統的工芸士). His meticulous craftsmanship ensures that each piece carries the essence of this rich heritage, blending traditional techniques with a modern sensibility.
Made in Japan, the Hishaku stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese tea culture. It is an ideal addition for tea enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate the deep-rooted traditions and fine craftsmanship associated with the tea ceremony. Whether used in formal tea gatherings or as an ornamental piece, the Hishaku offers a connection to the profound cultural and historical aspects of Japanese artistry.
As the whole piece is handmade in Nara, Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and the number of prongs might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
