Obori Soma Ware Double Layer Horse Pair Tea Cup / 大堀相馬焼 ペアカップ 湯呑

For more than 350 years, Obori Soma ware (大堀相馬焼) has been crafted in Namie, Fukushima, Japan. It is recognised by three distinctive features: a hand-painted galloping horse inspired by the region’s centuries-old horse culture; a soft, bluish celadon glaze covered with a delicate network of fine crackles known as *aohibi*, or “blue crackle”; and its remarkable double-walled construction.

By joining two vessels together before firing, artisans create a hollow layer of air between the walls. This helps hot drinks remain warm while keeping the exterior comfortable to hold. Cold drinks also stay cooler, with less condensation forming on the surface. Together, these characteristics have created a style of pottery found nowhere else in Japan.

In 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami forced the residents and artisans of Namie to leave their hometown, bringing more than three centuries of pottery-making to an abrupt halt. The craftspeople lost their kilns, workshops, and access to the local materials that had shaped their work for generations. Yet through years of perseverance, new materials were sourced, traditional techniques were preserved, and Obori Soma ware found a path forward.

A 350-year-old tradition that was once on the verge of disappearing can now find its way to your table. Every piece represents generations of craftsmanship, resilience, and the belief that traditions are meant to be carried forward.
