Tobu Kiln Bizen Pair Cup Gift Set
Bizen ware is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, cultivated over more than a thousand years in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture. Made without glaze and fired for extended periods in wood-burning kilns, each piece is formed through the direct and powerful interaction of clay, flame, and ash.
This collection presents works by Tōbu Kiln, a Bizen kiln recognised for its bold firing results and confident forms. Tōbu Kiln embraces the intensity of the firing process, allowing strong flame paths and ash flow to leave decisive marks on the surface of each piece.
Rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi, Tōbu Kiln’s work celebrates rawness and strength rather than refinement alone. Rich kiln effects—such as deep charcoal tones, ash accumulation (goma), and dramatic fire transitions (sangiri)—emerge naturally during long wood firings, giving each piece a striking, grounded presence.
While expressive and powerful, Tōbu Kiln’s forms remain purposeful and functional. The balance between utility and sculptural character makes these pieces equally suited to daily use and quiet appreciation.
All pieces are entirely handmade in Japan. No two are the same. Variations in size, colour, texture, and surface are inherent to Bizen ware and are not imperfections, but a testament to the natural firing process and the individuality of each piece.
