Description
With over a hundred years of history, Koikko stands as a guardian of Japan’s cherished doll-making traditions. Specialising in two celebrated techniques—Edo Kimekomi Ningyo (wooden dolls inlaid with cloth) and Edo Sekku Ningyo (festival dolls)—Koikko continues to uphold the time-honoured skills that have been passed down through generations. Each doll begins as a carefully shaped wooden form, into which fine fabrics are precisely inlaid, creating intricate patterns and lifelike expressions that speak of both artistry and heritage.

For more than forty years, third-generation master artisan Mitsumasa Matsuzaki (松崎光正) has dedicated his life to this craft, evolving designs to suit the changing tastes of the times while remaining true to the heart of the tradition. He often says that a doll is a mirror to the maker’s own spirit—it reflects sincerity, patience, and emotion. A doll cannot hide falsehoods; the artisan’s own feelings and character are inevitably woven into its form. This deep, personal connection ensures that every Koikko creation carries with it not just beauty, but a quiet soulfulness that resonates with those who behold it.

From the choice of materials to the final hand-finished details, each piece is crafted with the belief that the spirit of the maker lives on in their work. Whether displayed to celebrate a seasonal festival or cherished as a keepsake, Koikko dolls are timeless expressions of Japanese culture—bridging the elegance of the past with the sensibilities of the present, and preserving a craft that will continue to inspire for generations to come.

As each doll is individually handcrafted in Japan, slight variations in expression, pattern placement, and finish may occur. These subtle differences are a natural result of the artisan’s handwork, giving every piece its own unique character.

■ “Rino!” is a small kimekomi rhinoceros with a rounded, playful form and an uplifted golden horn brimming with energy. Crafted using the same traditional materials and techniques as fine Japanese dolls, it features rare inlaid fabrics such as gold brocade, hand-painted details, and eyes finished with black foil. A delightful piece that blends charm with the artistry of a collectible.
