CHINJUKAN Kiln Black Satsuma Ware Tea Set With Stove / 薩摩焼 沈壽官窯
Chinjukan Kiln (沈壽官窯) is one of Japan’s most distinguished Satsuma ware kilns, carrying a ceramic tradition that has continued for more than 420 years.
The kiln is especially renowned for White Satsuma ware (白薩摩), an exceptionally refined style recognised for its warm ivory body, delicate crackled glaze, intricate hand-painted decoration and fine gold detailing. Historically associated with the Satsuma domain, White Satsuma was highly prized for its elegance and craftsmanship, standing apart from ceramics made primarily for everyday use.
Each piece requires a remarkable level of skill and patience. Floral motifs, birds and traditional Japanese designs are carefully painted by hand, often complemented by subtle enamel colours and delicate gold accents. The result is a highly decorative ceramic art form in which even the smallest details reward close appreciation.
Chinjukan Kiln gained international recognition in the 19th century, when Satsuma ware was introduced to audiences overseas and became celebrated for its elaborate craftsmanship and distinctive beauty.
Today, the kiln is led by the 15th-generation Chinjukan (十五代 沈壽官), continuing centuries of inherited technique while also introducing a contemporary sensibility to the tradition.
About This Piece – Black Satsuma Ware Tea Set With Stove
The kurojoka (黒千代香) is a traditional Kagoshima vessel created especially for enjoying shochu. Shochu and water are traditionally mixed in advance and then gently warmed in the rounded Black Satsuma pot, creating a softer and more mellow drinking experience. This set brings that distinctive Kagoshima ritual into the home in a beautifully traditional form.
Crafted from iron-rich Kuro-Satsuma (黒薩摩) clay, the set includes the kurojoka, cup and warmer, with a natural woven-vine handle and candles for keeping the shochu gently warm. The depth of the black glaze and occasional reddish yōhen (窯変) tones vary naturally from firing to firing, making every set subtly different.
Please note: Black Satsuma ware naturally varies in colour, shape and weight. Depending on the firing conditions, some pieces may show reddish or brown tones rather than an entirely uniform black; these variations are part of the character of the ware and are not defects. The handle is made with natural vine and wire fittings.
As each piece is handmade, slight variations in size, glaze, colour and texture may occur, reflecting the unique character of artisan-made ceramics.
