CHINJUKAN Kiln Mini Beckoning Cat on Pillow - 3 Options / 薩摩焼 沈壽官窯

Chinjukan Kiln (沈壽官窯) is one of Japan’s most distinguished Satsuma ware kilns, carrying a ceramic tradition that has continued for more than 420 years.

The kiln is especially renowned for White Satsuma ware (白薩摩), an exceptionally refined style recognised for its warm ivory body, delicate crackled glaze, intricate hand-painted decoration and fine gold detailing. Historically associated with the Satsuma domain, White Satsuma was highly prized for its elegance and craftsmanship, standing apart from ceramics made primarily for everyday use.

Each piece requires a remarkable level of skill and patience. Floral motifs, birds and traditional Japanese designs are carefully painted by hand, often complemented by subtle enamel colours and delicate gold accents. The result is a highly decorative ceramic art form in which even the smallest details reward close appreciation.

Chinjukan Kiln gained international recognition in the 19th century, when Satsuma ware was introduced to audiences overseas and became celebrated for its elaborate craftsmanship and distinctive beauty.

Today, the kiln is led by the 15th-generation Chinjukan (十五代 沈壽官), continuing centuries of inherited technique while also introducing a contemporary sensibility to the tradition.

About This Piece – Mini Beckoning Cat on Pillow

A tiny handmade white cat resting comfortably on its own zabuton (座布団) cushion. Rather than the traditional raised-paw maneki-neko, these little cats capture familiar everyday poses that anyone who lives with a cat will recognise, giving them a particularly warm and playful character. There are three variations: Napping – Navy, curled peacefully into an afternoon sleep; Loaf Pose – Navy, sitting in the classic kōbako-zuwari (香箱座り) or “cat loaf” pose with its paws neatly tucked underneath; and Loaf Pose – Golden Brown, the same relaxed pose paired with a warmer golden-brown cushion.

As each piece is handmade, slight variations in size, glaze, colour and texture may occur, reflecting the unique character of artisan-made ceramics.
