CHINJUKAN Kiln White Satsuma Ware Plum Sparrow Cup and Saucer Set / 薩摩焼 沈壽官窯
Chinjukan Kiln (沈壽官窯) is one of Japan’s most distinguished Satsuma ware kilns, carrying a ceramic tradition that has continued for more than 420 years.
The kiln is especially renowned for White Satsuma ware (白薩摩), an exceptionally refined style recognised for its warm ivory body, delicate crackled glaze, intricate hand-painted decoration and fine gold detailing. Historically associated with the Satsuma domain, White Satsuma was highly prized for its elegance and craftsmanship, standing apart from ceramics made primarily for everyday use.
Each piece requires a remarkable level of skill and patience. Floral motifs, birds and traditional Japanese designs are carefully painted by hand, often complemented by subtle enamel colours and delicate gold accents. The result is a highly decorative ceramic art form in which even the smallest details reward close appreciation.
Chinjukan Kiln gained international recognition in the 19th century, when Satsuma ware was introduced to audiences overseas and became celebrated for its elaborate craftsmanship and distinctive beauty.
Today, the kiln is led by the 15th-generation Chinjukan (十五代 沈壽官), continuing centuries of inherited technique while also introducing a contemporary sensibility to the tradition.
About This Piece – White Satsuma Ware Plum Sparrow Cup and Saucer Set
Plump sparrows rest amongst flowering plum branches in this charming White Satsuma cup and saucer. Sparrows have long appeared in Japanese art as familiar, cheerful birds associated with good fortune, while the plum blossom brings a sense of resilience and the arrival of a new season. Small touches of gold on the plum buds add an especially refined finish.
Despite the detailed decoration, the set is designed to be enjoyed rather than simply displayed. With regular use, the fine crackle of the glaze will gradually deepen in tone, allowing the piece to develop its own patina and character over time.
Please note: This piece features kannyū (貫入), the fine natural crackle lines that form within the glaze as the piece is fired and cooled. Kannyū has long been appreciated in Japanese ceramics for the depth, character and sense of age it brings to a piece, with each item developing its own individual appearance over time. It is a natural characteristic of the glaze and is not considered a defect. Before first use, please soak in clean water for approximately five minutes. Wash promptly after use and dry thoroughly before storing.
As each piece is handmade, slight variations in size, glaze, colour and texture may occur, reflecting the unique character of artisan-made ceramics.
