Description

The technology of Chasen/茶筅 (matcha whisk) making has been passed down for 500 years. From the raw material of a piece of harvested bamboo, it is still hand-made only by one knife and human manual work.

Takayama Chasen (高山茶筅) is a long-established tea utensil with a history of about 500 years, which has continued since the late Muromachi period (室町時代).
The artisan of this Chasen, Mr. Sabun Kubo (久保左文氏), is the 24th generation owner of this Takayama chasen. He is certified by the country as a "traditional craftsman" (伝統的工芸士).

There are many types of Chasen. Each difference depends on the school(流派) and what kind of tea you want to make.

・宗和流 茶筅/ Bamboo Souwa

The shape of the tip is different. Instead of a normal curled one, this bamboo "Souwa" is curved in an oval shape, so the tip is straight.
The number of prongs is around 70.

Dimension: 6 cm Diameter (prong), 11 cm Height, 2.5 cm Diameter (Handle)

As the whole piece is handmade in Nara, Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and the number of prongs might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
