Kutani ware Vase with Tray in Wooden Box - Yamada Ryuzan / 九谷焼 花瓶 山田龍山
This exceptional porcelain vase is a refined example of Kutani ware (九谷焼), distinguished by its elegant hand-painted enamel work and the warm presence of natural motifs. Presented in its original signed kiri-wood box, it reflects the level of craftsmanship reserved for special commissions and collector-grade pieces.
Across the smooth white porcelain body, the artist paints a graceful composition of hozuki (鬼灯 / Japanese lantern plants)—their bright red pods glowing softly against a backdrop of delicately veined leaves. Hozuki have long symbolised protection, light, and the gentle transition from summer into early autumn. Their distinctive form is captured here with subtle layers of enamel, each stroke carefully applied to bring out the plant’s soft translucency and organic movement.
Perched lightly among the branches is a small songbird, rendered with Kutani’s signature finesse: rich green feathers, soft gradation, and clean outlining that give the bird a quiet vitality. Birds and seasonal plants have always been cherished themes in Japanese art, celebrating nature’s fleeting beauty and the harmony between living things.
The vase itself has a balanced, refined silhouette—widening softly at the shoulders and tapering toward the base. Faint throwing lines beneath the glaze reveal the potter’s hand, grounding the piece in quiet craftsmanship. Its presence is further elevated by a custom display stand, allowing it to sit beautifully in an alcove, entryway, or curated collection.
Finished with the artist’s red seal and enclosed in a calligraphy-signed wooden box, this vase is more than a vessel—it is a thoughtful expression of Kutani artistry, Japanese seasonality, and the timeless charm of handcrafted porcelain.
As the whole piece is handmade in Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
