Kutani Ware Vase - Kingfishers and Camellia / 九谷焼 花瓶

Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

On a clean white ground, a pair of kingfishers rests among camellia branches, their blue and gold plumage set against soft red blooms and sage-green leaves. It's a fuller, more classical composition than some Kutani pieces — flowers, foliage, and birds all working together rather than one motif carried alone.
