Kutani Ware Round Vase - Sky Blue Mountain and Cranes / 九谷焼 花瓶

Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

This one sits low and round, its deep teal glaze giving way to a misty mountain scene picked out in gold and silver. Bare trees rise from the base, hung with small gold leaves, while a loose scattering of cranes moves across the rim, sketched rather than detailed, as if glimpsed at a distance.
