Kutani Ware Oval Vase - Kingfisher on Willow / 九谷焼 花瓶

Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

A single kingfisher perches here among trailing willow leaves, its blue-green plumage rendered in real, almost photographic detail against a pale, watery ground. It's a stiller composition than a flock in flight — one bird, caught mid-pause, doing all the work.
