Kutani Ware Round Vase - Cranes Over Winter Trees / 九谷焼 花瓶

Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

On this piece, a pair of cranes flies low over a stand of bare winter trees, their branches picked out in fine gold and silver against a smoky, moonlit ground. It's a quieter scene than it first appears — the birds small in the frame, the trees doing most of the talking — closer to a landscape painting than a decorative pattern.
