Kutani Ware Vase - Flying Cranes / 九谷焼 花瓶
Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.
This particular vase carries a flock of cranes lifting across its rounded body, wings caught mid-stretch against a ground of hazy gold and smoke-dark cloud. Cranes have long carried meaning in Japanese design — longevity, good fortune, a safe return home — and here the artist has let them move rather than pose, each bird angled slightly differently as if genuinely airborne.
