Kutani Ware Teapot - Kingfishers on a Branch / 九谷焼 ティーポット

Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

What makes this piece lovely is the small story painted into it — a pair of kingfishers on a bare branch, one offering the other something caught mid-flight. It's a gentle, companionable scene, rendered with the same fine brushwork Kutani ware is known for but at a smaller, more intimate scale here than on a large vase.
