Kutani ware Premium Vase with Wooden Box - Yamada Ryuzan / 九谷焼 花瓶 山田龍山
This exceptionally crafted vase is a beautiful example of modern Kutani ware (九谷焼), showcasing the brilliance of hand-painted overglaze enamels that have defined the region for centuries. Presented in its original kiri-wood tomobako (signed wooden box), it reflects the level of artistry reserved for collector pieces and ceremonial gifting.
Across the pure white porcelain surface, vibrant red plum blossoms (紅梅) bloom with life, each petal built up in softly raised enamel for depth and texture. These blossoms symbolise resilience and the quiet strength to bloom even in winter’s final cold. Perched gently among the branches is a Japanese White-eye (メジロ)—a beloved herald of early spring, known for its bright plumage and light, hopeful presence. Together, this pairing is celebrated in Japanese art as “ume ni uguisu”, representing harmony, renewal, and the arrival of new seasons.
Every detail has been painted by hand, from the delicate outlining in red to the layered tones of green, yellow, and gold that give the bird and leaves their luminous finish. Subtle throwing lines beneath the glaze reveal the potter’s wheel, adding warmth and movement to the rounded form. The surface is smooth and refined, allowing the rich Kutani colours to stand out with clarity and brilliance.
With its elegant silhouette and auspicious motif, this vase stands beautifully on its own or as part of a curated collection.
As the whole piece is handmade in Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
