Kutani Ware Framed Ceramic Artwork - Kingfisher in Winter / 九谷焼 絵画
Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.
This piece steps outside the vase and bowl shapes you'll find elsewhere in Kutani work — a small piece of framed artwork, ready to hang, with a kingfisher perched on a bare branch against a snowy, autumn-leaf ground. A pale butterfly hovers nearby, small enough that you might not notice it straight away. The maple leaves scattered through the border tie the whole scene to a particular moment in the year, somewhere between the last of autumn and the first snow.
