Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

The painting is contained within a golden ochre panel, creating a focal point that draws the eye: a rich blue bloom rendered with precision, leaves in layered greens, all set against warmth. The dark, speckled glaze of the body provides ballast and presence, grounding the ornamental intensity of the painted section. This mug rewards being turned in your hand, revealing the interplay between decorated and plain, colour and shadow.
