Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

The bird and flowering branch seem to float across the mug in a composition that feels almost spontaneous, as though the artist found just the right balance of detail and space. The glaze has that characteristic Kutani restraint: warm, slightly textured, and entirely without fuss.
