Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

This mug holds a little pocket of colour and life against a grounded, earthy foundation. The artist has filled the upper register with movement—leaves, birds, the suggestion of a thriving corner of nature—while letting the dark glaze do the work of making you pause.
