Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture (石川県) with a history of over 360 years. The beauty of nature, brilliant colour and fine calligraphy are the key features of this style of Japanese porcelain.

What arrests the eye here is the painting: coral-red flowers with radiating petals, chrysanthemum-like blooms in shades of red and gold, all dancing across a soft pink ground. The brushwork shows tremendous confidence—the way the flowers overlap, the precision of the leaf work, the scatter of yellow accents that tie the composition together. This is Kutani at its most generous, the five colours layered and luminous, demanding to be looked at closely and often.
