Description

A Surikogi (すりこぎ) is a traditional Japanese wooden pestle used together with a Suribachi grinding bowl. An essential tool in the Japanese kitchen, it is ideal for grinding sesame seeds, spices and other ingredients, as well as preparing dressings, sauces and pastes.

This Surikogi is handcrafted in Japan from Sansho (Japanese pepper) wood, traditionally valued for its strength, distinctive natural texture and subtle aroma. From cutting the branches through to shaping and finishing each pestle, the process is completed by hand.

The natural bark is intentionally retained, giving every Surikogi its own character. Variations in thickness, curvature, knots, bark, colour and surface texture are therefore expected and are part of the beauty of this traditional handmade utensil.

When choosing a Surikogi, a useful guide is to select one approximately twice the diameter of your Suribachi, allowing for comfortable and efficient grinding.

As Each piece is made from natural wood and will vary in shape, thickness, bark pattern and colour.
