Ryo -凌/ Teacup
Founded in 1945 in Tokoname City(常滑市), Aichi Prefecture(愛知県), Gyokko Toen is the kiln that delivers this fine work.
Every process is made by hand. It is the work of Hirotaka Umehara(梅原廣隆氏), the second-generation traditional craftsman of Gyokko Toen(玉光陶園).
The material is a special mud called vermilion mud. It is baked at high temperatures without any glaze using carbonization firing, giving the work a unique matte black finish.
What is carbonization firing? It is a method of attaching carbon to the surface of the work and burning it black. Depending on the amount of charcoal, density, filling method, and soil type, various landscapes are created.
On the other hand, the vermilion clay of Tokoname City contains a lot of iron. The iron in the soil reacts with the tannins in the tea and soothes the astringent taste to mellow.
As every piece has its handmade feature, irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
