KOUSAIDO Waboku Japanese Wood fragrance Incense - 3 Options / 香彩堂 和木のお香
Kousaido (香彩堂) is a Kyoto-based incense maker with a simple but deeply felt philosophy — to colour your life with fragrance. Drawing on Kyoto's centuries-old incense traditions and the city's ever-changing seasons, Kousaido blends ancient Japanese craftsmanship with a modern sensibility to create scents that feel equally at home in a quiet morning ritual or an everyday moment of pause. Natural sandalwood forms the heart of every blend, layered with woods, botanicals, and florals to build fragrances that are both grounded and evocative. The range is wide and thoughtfully curated — from rare agarwood and kyara to playful contemporary series inspired by ukiyo-e prints, woodland creatures, and the colours of autumn leaves — all presented in packaging as considered as the scents within. Rooted in the belief that incense has the power to calm the mind, cleanse a space, and bring a quiet richness to daily life, Kousaido invites you to slow down and let fragrance do the rest.
Waboku — 和木, meaning “Japanese wood” — is one of Kousaido’s most quietly expressive incense series.
It begins with a simple thought: that the native trees of Japan, each carrying its own character, memory, and atmosphere, are fragrant enough to become incense in their own right.
Hinoki (檜 — Japanese Cypress) — The most immediately recognisable of the three for anyone who's stepped into a hinoki bath or a freshly built Japanese room. Clean, bright, and faintly resinous, it captures that particular quality of sunlight filtering into a forest clearing — calm without being sleepy, and refreshing without being sharp.
Keyaki (欅 — Zelkova) — Zelkova is one of Japan's great timber trees, slow-growing and deeply grained, and its scent carries something of that patience. This is the most understated of the three — gentle, settled, and quietly graceful, the kind of fragrance that suits a room you want to feel lived-in and at ease.
Kusunoki (楠 — Camphor) — Camphor has a more assertive presence than the other two: cool, slightly medicinal, and with an earthy depth that feels like it's coming up from the roots rather than the canopy. It's the most grounding scent of the series, and the one that makes a room feel most thoroughly cleared.
