KOUSAIDO Kyoto Sanshisuimei Incense with Wooden Box - 5 Options / 香彩堂 山紫水明
Kousaido (香彩堂) is a Kyoto-based incense maker with a simple but deeply felt philosophy — to colour your life with fragrance. Drawing on Kyoto's centuries-old incense traditions and the city's ever-changing seasons, Kousaido blends ancient Japanese craftsmanship with a modern sensibility to create scents that feel equally at home in a quiet morning ritual or an everyday moment of pause. Natural sandalwood forms the heart of every blend, layered with woods, botanicals, and florals to build fragrances that are both grounded and evocative. The range is wide and thoughtfully curated — from rare agarwood and kyara to playful contemporary series inspired by ukiyo-e prints, woodland creatures, and the colours of autumn leaves — all presented in packaging as considered as the scents within. Rooted in the belief that incense has the power to calm the mind, cleanse a space, and bring a quiet richness to daily life, Kousaido invites you to slow down and let fragrance do the rest.
Sanshisuimei — 山紫水明 is an old Japanese phrase describing a landscape of purple mountains and clear waters, and it's the one Kousaido reached for when naming their most quietly Kyoto series. Each of the five scents is drawn from a specific place or moment in the city, all sharing a sandalwood base and presented in a paulownia wood box that keeps the sticks in good condition between burns.
Saga no Asagiri (嵯峨の朝霧) — Morning mist over the bamboo groves of Sagano. Sandalwood, oakmoss, and lily of the valley come together into something cool, green, and unhurried — the freshest of the five, and a natural choice for mornings.
Murasakino no Yugasumi (紫野の夕霞) — The faint purple haze that settles over the fields of Murasakino at dusk. Sandalwood blended with tuberose and jasmine; softly floral, a little wistful, and warmer than its name suggests.
Gion no Hana (祇園の華) — The streets of Gion at night, at their most quietly glamorous. A sweet and elegant blend of sandalwood, ylang-ylang, and amber — the most richly fragrant of the series, and the one that lingers longest.
Arashiyama no Tsukikage (嵐山の月影) — Moonlight reflected on the river at Arashiyama, clear and still. Sandalwood with borneol and musk; serene and slightly cool, with a transparent quality that feels like light on water.
Kamo no Seseragi (加茂のせせらぎ) — The Kamo River on a pale afternoon, audible before it's visible. Sandalwood, freesia, and gardenia blend into something fresh and quietly moving — the most open-air feeling of the five.
