Description

Kousaido (香彩堂) is a Kyoto-based incense maker with a simple but deeply felt philosophy — to colour your life with fragrance. Drawing on Kyoto's centuries-old incense traditions and the city's ever-changing seasons, Kousaido blends ancient Japanese craftsmanship with a modern sensibility to create scents that feel equally at home in a quiet morning ritual or an everyday moment of pause. Natural sandalwood forms the heart of every blend, layered with woods, botanicals, and florals to build fragrances that are both grounded and evocative. The range is wide and thoughtfully curated — from rare agarwood and kyara to playful contemporary series inspired by ukiyo-e prints, woodland creatures, and the colours of autumn leaves — all presented in packaging as considered as the scents within. Rooted in the belief that incense has the power to calm the mind, cleanse a space, and bring a quiet richness to daily life, Kousaido invites you to slow down and let fragrance do the rest.

The Tennen series uses only essential oils, wood powders, and rare resins — no dyes, no synthetic fragrance — to capture what Kousaido calls the feeling of breathing deeply in a forest. Five trees, each from a specific region of Japan, each rendered as faithfully as incense can manage.

White Camphor Tree / 楠 : Made from the wood powder of camphor trees grown in Kyushu, southern Japan, this is the most clarifying of the five — cool, clean, and faintly sharp in the way camphor always is. It has a natural insect-repelling quality that speaks to how the tree has been used for centuries, but what you notice first is simply the freshness: the feeling of a deep breath taken somewhere green and open.

Aomori Hiba / 青森ヒバ : Hiba from Aomori prefecture, in the far north of Honshu, is one of Japan's most prized timber species, and the essential oil and wood powder used here carry its full character — cool and clarifying at first, then opening into something faintly sweet and earthy, with a quality that feels familiar without being easy to place. It's the kind of scent that brings something of the forest floor with it, grounding in a way that pure coolness alone doesn't quite achieve.

Kitayama Sugi / 北山杉 : Made from cedar grown in the Kitayama district of Kyoto — trees cultivated for centuries for their straight grain and quiet beauty — this is the warmest and most resinous of the five. The scent is composed and unhurried, with a natural warmth that settles a room rather than announcing itself. For those who find cypress or camphor a little too crisp, sugi offers something softer and more enveloping.

Japanese Cypress / 檜 : Using essential oil and wood powder of hinoki cypress from Kiso in Nagano prefecture, central Japan, this is the most immediately recognisable of the five to anyone who has spent time in a Japanese bathhouse or an old wooden room. Clean, fresh, and quietly sweet, hinoki is a scent that manages to feel both familiar and particular — grounding without being heavy, and calm without being dull.

Japanese Red Pine / 赤松 : From red pine grown in the Kitayama district of Kyoto, this is the most characterful of the five — faintly sweet but with a strength beneath it, dry and quietly sharp in a way that feels energising rather than austere. Where the other four tend toward stillness, red pine has a little more presence, the kind of scent that seems to bring some air into a room along with it.
