Description

In the mountain town of Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture, ceramic artist Hiroyuki Onuki creates works that balance graphic clarity with the quiet rhythm of nature. Formerly a graphic designer in Tokyo, Onuki turned to ceramics in search of something more enduring — objects shaped entirely by his own hands, grounded in everyday life. His experience in design continues to influence his work today, seen in the clean silhouettes and measured patterns that define his signature style.

Though his pieces have been exhibited and collected by museums across Japan, Onuki remains deeply rooted in the community he creates for. Each year, he and his wife personally attend local ceramic festivals, greeting visitors with warmth and sincerity. We met him in person for the first time at one of these gatherings — a humble and kind presence among rows of his beautifully detailed works. That encounter captured exactly what his ceramics express: a gentle harmony between craft, honesty, and human connection.

Clean, architectural silhouettes and intricate floral motifs reveal the influence of his design background, while his motifs — from camellia and lotus to abstract brushstrokes — embody the essence of Japan’s natural beauty and artistic restraint. Each piece is a reflection of both his disciplined craftsmanship and his gentle spirit — contemporary, poetic, and timelessly human.

Flower Series (花文様 / Floral Collection)
Inspired by the wild blossoms surrounding his Kasama studio, Onuki’s Flower Series layers iron slip, white slip, and delicate overglaze to create vessels that feel both modern and nostalgic. Each mug cup bears hand-carved floral motifs — camellia, plum, lotus, or peony — abstracted into patterns reminiscent of Japanese textiles. Through his meticulous process, nature’s quiet elegance unfolds gently across the clay surface, like flowers blooming under soft spring light.

All products crafted by Hiroyuki Onuki are wholly handmade. There is no identical piece offering. Irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture may occur and reflect the artisan nature of the product and should be embraced.
