Harumi Hayakawa is a Kyoto-based ceramic artist whose works are regarded as some of the most captivating expressions of contemporary Japanese pottery. After years of tireless creation, he left his former career to devote himself entirely to ceramics, quickly gaining the attention of established masters and collectors alike. His pieces are highly sought after and difficult to obtain, admired for their originality, technical precision, and the profound sense of “keshiki” (scenery) they evoke—whether it be the glow of the cosmos, the depths of the ocean, or the flicker of flame.
Each vessel is created through an extraordinarily intricate process: layers of six to seven glazes applied with calculated precision, multiple firings at carefully controlled temperatures, and the subtle interplay between clay and glaze that only years of refinement can achieve. The result is an otherworldly beauty—luminous blues that shimmer under light, translucent reds with jewel-like depth, and surfaces that reveal shifting expressions with every angle or when sake is poured. Yuubi (幽美) is a one-of-a-kind sake cup named for the profound and mystical landscape born from the natural flow of its glaze. Deep indigo and navy tones cascade like nightfall over the cosmos, while inside the vessel countless flecks of gold and silver glimmer like distant stardust, dissolving into waves of luminous blue that shift with every change of angle or light. The outer surface carries the same intensity, where layers of vivid blue and navy are alive with scattered metallic specks, evoking an aurora burning across the dark expanse of space. When touched by sunlight or when filled with sake, the glaze refracts the light into a radiant lapis lazuli glow, transforming the cup into a vision of celestial brilliance.
