Harumi Hayakawa is a Kyoto-based ceramic artist whose works are regarded as some of the most captivating expressions of contemporary Japanese pottery. After years of tireless creation, he left his former career to devote himself entirely to ceramics, quickly gaining the attention of established masters and collectors alike. His pieces are highly sought after and difficult to obtain, admired for their originality, technical precision, and the profound sense of “keshiki” (scenery) they evoke—whether it be the glow of the cosmos, the depths of the ocean, or the flicker of flame.
Each vessel is created through an extraordinarily intricate process: layers of six to seven glazes applied with calculated precision, multiple firings at carefully controlled temperatures, and the subtle interplay between clay and glaze that only years of refinement can achieve. The result is an otherworldly beauty—luminous blues that shimmer under light, translucent reds with jewel-like depth, and surfaces that reveal shifting expressions with every angle or when sake is poured. Mugen (夢幻) is a sake cup of mystery and ethereality, as if it has captured the glow of a nebula or the light of the deep sea within its form. Its surface is cloaked in jet-black glaze, over which streams of profound indigo flow like drifting cosmic clouds. This indigo is no ordinary blue—it shifts with the light, revealing fluid, complex expressions that seem to expand like a living nebula. The lustrous surface reflects and refracts, so that from certain angles the vessel appears to emit a radiant blue light from within, an otherworldly glow that makes each glance feel like peering into infinity.
