Harumi Hayakawa is a Kyoto-based ceramic artist whose works are regarded as some of the most captivating expressions of contemporary Japanese pottery. After years of tireless creation, he left his former career to devote himself entirely to ceramics, quickly gaining the attention of established masters and collectors alike. His pieces are highly sought after and difficult to obtain, admired for their originality, technical precision, and the profound sense of “keshiki” (scenery) they evoke—whether it be the glow of the cosmos, the depths of the ocean, or the flicker of flame.
Each vessel is created through an extraordinarily intricate process: layers of six to seven glazes applied with calculated precision, multiple firings at carefully controlled temperatures, and the subtle interplay between clay and glaze that only years of refinement can achieve. The result is an otherworldly beauty—luminous blues that shimmer under light, translucent reds with jewel-like depth, and surfaces that reveal shifting expressions with every angle or when sake is poured. More than tableware, his works are experiences in themselves: rare, breathtaking, and filled with the quiet power of art born from absolute dedication.
Izumi (泉水) is a sake cup of serene depth and quiet strength, embodying the purity of spring water and the vastness of the night sky. Its exterior gleams in a clear aquamarine blue, calming and pristine like a mountain spring, while the interior opens into a deep indigo world scattered with silver specks like distant stars. Striking streaks of luminous blue flash across the surface, recalling lightning or aurora, bringing energy to the stillness. Named after “spring water,” Izumi captures vitality within calm, a vessel that reveals new beauty with every glance.
This vessel is unique—there is only one available, and the very piece shown in the photos is the one that will arrive at you. Like all handcrafted works, its glaze and colours may reveal different nuances under varying light, reflecting the true charm of an artisan creation
