Hagi ware (萩焼) is a traditional pottery from Hagi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Loved for centuries, it is known for its unique kannyū (貫入) — the fine, natural crackle lines that appear due to the differing shrinkage of clay and glaze during firing. As you continue to use the piece, water slowly permeates these lines, and the colour and expression of the clay begin to deepen and change.
This gentle transformation is considered one of the true joys of Hagi ware. It is so highly regarded that tea masters have long honoured it with the saying: “Ichiraku, Nihagi, Sankaratsu” — Raku first, Hagi second, Karatsu third.
Please note that water-repellent treatments on pottery are not permanent; they soften with use so that the natural ageing of Hagi ware can unfold beautifully over time.
While retaining the warm, organic texture of traditional Hagi clay, the surface reveals a luminous glass layer that seems to float above the form — creating a gentle, sparkling presence that enhances any dish placed upon it.
As the whole piece is handmade in Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
