Edo Kiriko(江戸切子) is a cut glass craft known for its gorgeously intricate patterns.

It originated about 200 years ago in Edo/江戸, the city now called Tokyo. Over the years, the craft evolved, and Edo Kiriko continues to innovate today. Now, Edo Kiriko is designated by Japan as a traditional handicraft.

The glass is melted at 1,350 degrees Celsius and skillfully finished into a double structure of clear and coloured glass. Edo faceted glass artisans with skilful techniques carefully cut (shave) each piece of glass one by one.

Edo Kiriko uses many traditional Japanese motif patterns to appeal to Japanese taste. The cut glass reveals the inner transparent glass through the coloured glass on the surface, and the excellent contrast between the transparent and coloured glass is highlighted by the traditional patterns.

As the whole piece is handmade in Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
