These lacquered chopsticks from Obama City in Fukui Prefecture are part of a tradition that has been shaped, quite literally, by generations of local craftspeople. The lacquer is applied in layers — colour over colour — so that the final hue has a quiet depth to it, shifting slightly depending on the light. These chopsticks are made from natural Japanese wood. The upper section is polished with a non-slip finish, making it easier to grip food. As each piece is handmade in Japan, slight variations in size, colour and texture may occur. These natural irregularities reflect the character of artisan-made products.
