Bizen Pottery, shaped over a span of more than 1,000 years, originates from the village of Bizen in Japan, renowned for its lineage of dedicated artisans. Collaborating with these skilled craftsmen, we proudly present our inaugural collection of Bizen ware created by young, high-profile, and promising artists. Their expertise harmoniously blends the rich traditions of Bizen Pottery with contemporary influences, resulting in exquisite pieces of art. Rooted in the essence of wabi-sabi, each piece celebrates nature's simplicity and asymmetry. Crafted with pure clay and fired for weeks at low temperatures, Bizen Pottery boasts both natural beauty and exceptional durability. Each Bizen artist's journey intertwines deeply with their heritage as they continuously challenge and refine their aesthetic expression. The distinctive clay used and the firing process, fueled by the power of natural fire, contribute to the captivating patterns and colours that make Bizen Pottery truly exceptional.

Ishida Kazuya is a Bizen ceramic artist known for combining the traditions of his hometown with an experimental and international approach to ceramics. After training at the Bizen Ceramics Center, he studied under Bizen Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before travelling to England, where he worked and trained at the studios of renowned potters including Lisa Hammond and Whichford Pottery. These experiences helped shape a distinctive practice that bridges Japanese and British ceramic traditions. Ishida is particularly recognised for his original Raho (螺法, “spiral technique”), which uses the centrifugal force of the potter’s wheel to create dynamic twisting forms inspired by natural structures such as shells, geological strata, glaciers and limestone formations. His ongoing exploration also extends to “Bizen Wild Porcelain,” made from naturally occurring porcelain stone that he personally excavates in Bizen. Through his work, Ishida continues to explore how the materials, firing traditions and philosophy of Bizen can evolve into new forms while remaining deeply connected to the land from which they originate.

As each piece is handmade, slight variations in size, glaze, colour and texture may occur, reflecting the unique character of artisan-made ceramics.
