Tomioka Shoten, based in Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture, is dedicated to preserving the traditional art of Kaba-zaiku — Japanese cherry bark craft. Using the bark of wild mountain cherry trees, the maker continues a centuries-old practice that transforms a natural material into refined objects for daily use. Each piece carries the warmth of the material itself, shaped by hand into something both practical and enduring.

The cherry bark used in this craft is carefully gathered through a sustainable forestry cycle known as “renewal,” where trees are harvested in a way that supports the long-term health of the surrounding mountains. In Kaba-zaiku, this natural material is shaped into wares with depth, texture, and a lasting connection to the cherry tree beyond the blossom season.

Hand-finished to reveal its distinctive lustre, Tomioka’s collection offers a rare expression of sakura through material rather than flower. Each piece is both practical and deeply atmospheric, designed to be lived with and appreciated over time. As the surface matures with use, it becomes not simply an object to admire, but a companion in daily life — shaped by the meeting of nature, craft, and function.
