Founded in 1949 in Aomori Prefecture (青森県), Hokuyo Glass (北洋硝子) has become renowned as the maker of Tsugaru Vidro (津軽びいどろ). This glassware is celebrated for its ability to capture the shun (seasonal essence) of Japan — more than 100 colours are combined to evoke the fleeting beauty of landscapes, festivals, and natural scenes that linger in memory.
The journey to this achievement was not without challenges. Aomori, located at the northernmost tip of Honshu (本州), faced geographical isolation and limited transport. With few options for sourcing, the artisans developed the skills to prepare their own coloured glass in-house. This necessity demanded extraordinary craftsmanship, blending inherited traditions with tireless innovation. The Tsugaru Vidro of today reflects decades of experimentation, refinement, and artistry.
Although now admired worldwide, the workshop remains in Aomori, unchanged in spirit. Inside, artisans continue to shape glass by hand, crafting pieces that are at once timeless and forward-looking. Each object reflects both continuity and quiet innovation, carrying the warmth of human touch.
As every piece is handmade in Japan, slight variations in size, colour, and texture are to be embraced. These subtle differences are not flaws, but the natural signature of the artisan’s hand.
