Description
In the quiet rhythm of Japanese tea preparation, the yuzamashi plays a subtle but essential role. Made by skilled artisans in Tokoname — one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns — these water-cooling bowls are designed to adjust boiling water to the ideal temperature before it touches delicate tea leaves.

Whether preparing sencha, gyokuro, or other high-grade green teas, pouring hot water into a yuzamashi allows it to cool slightly, helping release the sweetness and umami of the tea while softening any bitterness. This thoughtful pause honours both the leaves and the moment.

Each yuzamashi is made from natural Tokoname clay and carefully shaped for a smooth pour, with subtle variations in colour and form reflecting the character of the kiln and the hand that made it. Simple, intuitive, and versatile, it is an understated companion to any tea ritual.

Crafted by Tokutaisaku in Tokoname, this yuzamashi features a softly flared rim and a speckled, stone-like glaze that shifts subtly in the light. Designed to gently cool boiling water before brewing fine teas like sencha or gyokuro, its quiet form and tactile texture invite a pause in the ritual — a moment to honour water, clay, and time.

Each piece carries the weight of time-honoured techniques and skills passed down through generations, making it a timeless addition to your home.

As every piece has its handmade feature, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
