Historically associated with the Satsuma domain, White Satsuma was highly prized for its elegance and craftsmanship, standing apart from ceramics made primarily for everyday use.

Each piece requires a remarkable level of skill and patience. Floral motifs, birds and traditional Japanese designs are carefully painted by hand, often complemented by subtle enamel colours and delicate gold accents. The result is a highly decorative ceramic art form in which even the smallest details reward close appreciation.

Chinjukan Kiln gained international recognition in the 19th century, when Satsuma ware was introduced to audiences overseas and became celebrated for its elaborate craftsmanship and distinctive beauty.

Today, the kiln is led by the 15th-generation Chinjukan (十五代 沈壽官), continuing centuries of inherited technique while also introducing a contemporary sensibility to the tradition.

About This Piece – White Satsuma Ware Chrysanthemum Footed Cup and Saucer Set

This remarkable cup and saucer traces its design back to the Meiji era, when the 12th-generation Chinjukan created the original form for the Mitsui family, one of Japan’s most prominent merchant families. More than a century later, the design continues to be produced by the kiln, giving the piece a rare connection to the history of Satsuma craftsmanship.

The chrysanthemum-shaped saucer stands gently on small bud-shaped feet, creating an elegant raised silhouette. Ornate without feeling excessive, it transforms an everyday cup of coffee or tea into something much more special.

Please note: This piece features kannyū (貫入), the fine natural crackle lines that form within the glaze as the piece is fired and cooled. Kannyū has long been appreciated in Japanese ceramics for the depth, character and sense of age it brings to a piece, with each item developing its own individual appearance over time. It is a natural characteristic of the glaze and is not considered a defect. Before first use, please soak in clean water for approximately five minutes. Wash promptly after use and dry thoroughly before storing.

As each piece is handmade, slight variations in size, glaze, colour and texture may occur, reflecting the unique character of artisan-made ceramics.

◾ Handmade in Japan

◾ What's included? - One (1) Tea Cup and One (1) Saucer in a Box.

◾ Material: Ceramic

◾ Size

- Cup: Width 10.7 cm (including handle) x Height 6.3 cm (Rim diameter 8 cm)

- Saucer: Diameter 13.6 cm x Height 3.2 cm

- Cup on saucer: Height 7.5 cm

◾ Comfortable capacity: 160 ml (Full capacity: 200 ml)

◾ NOT Suitable for Microwave OR Dishwasher

◾ Comes with a box.
