Kutani ware Vase with Wooden Gift Box - Shibata Hiroshi - Aoi / 九谷焼 花瓶
This elegant vase is the work of Shibata Hiroshi, a master ceramicist of Hakuhou Kiln (博峰窯), born in 1950 in Ishikawa Prefecture—the heartland of Kutani ware. Trained under esteemed mentors including Takeshi Yamachika and Fujio Kitade, Shibata’s work blends classical craftsmanship with modern refinement. His pieces have been honoured at prestigious exhibitions such as Nitten and are preserved in national institutions, including the Kutani Ware Museum and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art.
The vase features a serene gradient of deep indigo and sky blue, fading into subtle celadon near the rim. This colour composition evokes a sense of vastness and calm—like a clear evening sky descending into the sea. Shibata's signature glazing technique creates a sense of depth and movement, with delicate speckling and translucency across the surface.
Encased in a signed wooden box, this piece is both a collectible and a striking decorative object. It stands as a testament to Kutani ware’s continued evolution—imbued with tradition, but alive with Shibata’s personal expression and mastery.
As the whole piece is handmade in Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
