The pattern of this flower is camellia(TSUBAKI/椿).
Camellia has long been a representative of noble flowers in the tea ceremony, and therefore, it was used to design many matcha bowls. It is a Seto ware made in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, famous as the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan.
The shape of this chawan is a half-cylindrical type, with straight sides and a flatter bottom. This shape makes whisking matcha easier as the vertical walls help keep the tea from splashing over the lip.
In addition to the coarse bottom and heavyweight, it is great for matcha lovers to stabilise the bowl on any surface.
As the whole piece is handmade in Seto City, Japan, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
